Web designer D. Keith Robinson asks his reader how they consume RSS — full text or summary, do they mind ads in feeds, and the obligatory "what reader do you use?" There are a lot of responses, which doesn't necessarily make it a representative sample, but for those willing to go out on a limb and extrapolate, here are the themes:
-
Many users will click-through to the site to read interesting posts, even if the whole post is presented in the reader.
-
Ads in feeds are not desirable. (Are ads ever desirable, really?)
-
Bloglines is on fire. A ton of people use it and love it enough to evangelize it. Is there another server-side reader that can compare? Maybe there are a lot of people using My Yahoo to read feeds, just due to the number of Yahoo users, but they certainly aren't trumpeting the joys of it…
If people really love reading their feeds on a web app, maybe Google should extend Gmail to cover that ground. Or just use some of their IPO cash to buy Bloglines…
Keith gives his own summary of the results, as well, but I hope that the thread continues. It's always interesting to hear how people are using RSS.

1. I tested every desktop rss reader out there and some web based: bloglines is the best! Well designed, fast, and every week new improvements are communicated- Gmail and bloglines are really two great web applications! Also testing a third : furl, that seems also very good.
