Google Readying RSS-Ad Service

As a potential new dimension to its AdSense syndication program, Google is reportedly preparing a service that would place ads in RSS or Atom feeds. This seeming no-brainer would give bloggers a turnkey solution for monetizing their content, traffic for which is increasingly migrating away from the Web site into the RSS-fed newsreader. Stay tuned on this one; if Google brings RSS ad syndication to the masses as it did Web-page ad syndication, this service would seriously rock the boat. The only question is whether advertisers would go for it. Google might launch the service with the same forced persuasion as it did Gmail, by forcing advertisers to accept the new platform along with the entire AdSense content network. This makes it impossible for an AdWords advertiser to select Web-page placement but not Gmail placement, for example, or Gmail but not RSS feeds. Many AdWords advertisers generally are jaded about advertising in the content network, because clickthrough results and conversions are lower for many campaigns. Such asdvertisers do have the option of limiting their ad placement to Google pages. With Google's announcement that CPM advertisers are able to choose the placement of their ads with unprecedented precision, Google might be leaning away from bundling platforms. Time will tell. What we can say for sure is that a Google-branded RSS monetization program would enjoy dramatic adoption among bloggers.
